Kerama Islands vs Manza vs Blue Cave: The Differences in Okinawa Diving

Kerama Islands vs Manza vs Blue Cave: The Differences in Okinawa Diving

To begin with the conclusion, if you are planning to come to Okinawa Main Island or Naha for diving, we first recommend diving in the Kerama Islands, which is the most standard and popular destination.

If you are diving over several days, it can be a great experience to visit different dive sites. However, if you only have one day for diving, the Kerama Islands are the best and most classic choice.

Okinawa is one of Japan’s top diving destinations, offering a wide variety of dive sites with very different characteristics. Among the most popular are the Kerama Islands, Manza, and the Blue Cave. Each location offers a unique underwater experience depending on your skill level, interests, and what you want to see.

In this article, we will compare these three famous dive spots to help you understand their differences.

1. Kerama Islands – World-Class Visibility and Marine Life

The Kerama Islands are located about 40–50 minutes by boat from Naha and are known for their incredibly clear waters, often called “Kerama Blue.” It is the most classic and popular diving destination from Okinawa’s main island.

Highlights:

  • Excellent visibility (often 20–35m)
  • Rich coral reefs
  • Sea turtles are commonly seen
  • Large schools of tropical fish
  • Suitable for certified divers (fun diving)

To briefly describe diving in the Kerama Islands, it offers beautiful coral reefs, sea turtles, excellent underwater visibility, and a wide variety of marine life. There are also many different types of dive sites, including caves, coral areas, pure white sandy bottoms, and dramatic drop-off points. ≫More about marine life

The Kerama Islands offer a large variety of dive sites, and the dive locations are selected based on the wind and sea conditions each day. This allows us to choose calm and sheltered sites, so divers can usually enjoy smooth conditions with little surface wave action. As a result, diving in the Kerama Islands is also suitable for less experienced divers.

Another advantage is that the Kerama Islands can be reached on a day trip from Naha. If you are staying in Naha City, it is easy to join a diving tour without changing accommodation. Our Kerama Islands diving tours include complimentary pickup and drop-off service within Naha City.

2. Manza – Dramatic Reef Formations and Big Fish Encounters

The Cape Manzamo / Manza area (commonly referred to as Manza) is located on the west coast of Okinawa’s main island.

Highlights:

  • Dream Hole (also known as Pikachu Hole) is one of the most popular dive sites.
  • You can encounter green sea turtles.
  • There is often a current.
  • Not suitable for beginners or inexperienced divers.
  • Visibility typically ranges from 15 to 20 meters.

Diving in Manza is best known for Dream Hole, a famous dive site featuring an underwater cave that resembles the silhouette of Pikachu. There are also several other dive sites in the area.

Many of the dive sites in Manza are affected by currents, making them less suitable for beginners or divers with limited experience. Even when there is a current, divers are often required to swim back toward the boat, which may involve swimming against the current underwater.

In terms of access, Manza is located more than an hour by car from Naha, and traffic on the return journey can be heavy. For this reason, if you are staying in Naha, we generally think the Kerama Islands are a more convenient and rewarding choice than making the trip to Manza.

Please note that we currently do not offer diving tours in Manza.

3. Blue Cave – Calm, Scenic, and Beginner-Friendly

The Blue Cave (Cape Maeda) is one of Okinawa’s most famous snorkeling and diving spots. It is a dive site suitable for both beginners and experienced divers.

Highlights:

  • Stunning blue light inside the cave
  • Calm and shallow water
  • Popular for snorkeling and introductory dives
  • verage visibility is around 20 meters.
  • The site may be closed when there is a northerly wind.

Diving at Cape Maeda and the Blue Cave is, as the name suggests, all about the famous Blue Cave. On sunny days with fewer visitors, you can fully enjoy the cave's beautiful blue light and atmosphere.

However, during the high season, the area becomes extremely crowded with snorkelers and introductory divers. As a result, the dive site can be very busy, and inside the cave you will often see large numbers of snorkelers and their fins on the surface above.

At Cape Maeda, divers usually have two options: boat diving or shore diving. Boat diving is generally more comfortable, as you can enter the water directly in front of the cave. With shore diving, you must carry your equipment up and down approximately 100 steps, which can be physically demanding.

The site is also very sensitive to northerly winds. Even a slight northerly wind can cause the site to close due to sea conditions. It is a good idea to check the forecast in advance using weather services such as Windy.

In terms of access, Cape Maeda is located about one hour by car from Naha, similar to Manza.

Please note that we currently do not offer diving tours at Cape Maeda or the Blue Cave.
