Is Kerama Diving Tour in Okinawa Suitable for Beginners?
Of course. Our diving tours in the Kerama Islands are suitable even for beginner divers, so you can join with confidence.
There are many dive sites around the Kerama Islands, and basically we dive by anchoring the boat in calm, shallow areas. Since we enter the water where the bottom is visible, and the average underwater visibility in the Kerama Islands is around 20–30 meters, most guests feel very comfortable underwater with little sense of fear.
If you are worried about descending, you can hold onto the anchor rope and descend slowly while equalizing your ears. Our guides will support you throughout the dive to help you enjoy the experience safely, so please feel free to join with confidence.
For guests with good diving skills, we may do a drift dive on the third dive. However, even our drift dives are usually in mild currents that are comfortable and enjoyable, not strong or dangerous currents. While drifting gently along the reef, you may see beautiful coral, sea turtles, and if you are lucky, even whale sharks or manta rays!
Please note: when we say “beginner,” we mean certified divers with limited diving experience.
A Quick Review of Basic Diving Skills
Many people who come to Okinawa for sightseeing or vacation only dive a few times a year, so for many guests it may be their first dive in a long time. Let’s do a quick review of basic diving skills!
Proper Weighting
In Okinawa and the Kerama Islands, 10-liter steel tanks are commonly used for diving. Our rental wetsuits are generally 3mm in summer and 5mm during the rest of the year. If you remember your proper weight amount, or if you have it written in your logbook, please check it in advance before your dive.
Descent
If you are still not very comfortable with diving, it is easier and more comfortable to hold onto the rope while descending. This also makes equalizing your ears easier. There is no need to rush — descend slowly while making sure to equalize properly.
If you are worried about equalizing your ears, you can also practice at home before your trip, which can help you feel more comfortable during the dive.
Buoyancy Control & Finning Techniques
Underwater, it is important to be aware of whether you are sinking or floating too much, and use your breathing and BCD to maintain neutral buoyancy. By doing this, you can keep a horizontal position in the water and swim without stirring up sand from the bottom.
When swimming, try not to wave your arms around. Instead, use slow, large fin kicks and swim in a calm and relaxed manner.
Stay Close to the Guide
In diving, you should basically stay at the same depth as your guide and remain close to them, as this is the safest position.
If you drift too far away, there is a risk of getting separated from the group. Also, when rare marine life appears, the guide is usually the first to notice it.
That’s why, during a dive, you can remember that staying close to your guide is always the best position!
